While you’re busy implementing complex zero-trust security models and rotating your development API keys every 15 minutes, xAI—Elon Musk’s answer to the question “what if we built AI but with more hubris?”—just reminded us all that the most sophisticated AI systems in the world are still vulnerable to the oldest mistake in the developer handbook: committing API keys to GitHub1.

The Emperor’s New Security Posture

An xAI developer managed to leak API keys that granted access to 60 private large language models, including unreleased Grok models and LLMs fine-tuned with internal SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter/X data. The keys sat exposed on GitHub for a brisk two months before GitGuardian—not xAI’s own security team—finally discovered them1.

Let’s appreciate the irony for a moment: companies building supposedly revolutionary artificial intelligence can’t implement the most basic git pre-commit hooks that would catch API keys. This isn’t just dropping your keys at the grocery store—it’s leaving them in the ignition with the engine running, doors unlocked, and a sign saying “Free Car” taped to the windshield.

The Inevitable Convergence of AI and Bad Security

What we’re witnessing is the perfectly predictable collision of two trends:

  1. The rush to build and deploy AI systems faster than competitors
  2. The persistent belief that security is something you can add later

This is the same pattern we’ve seen with every technological revolution:

  • Web 1.0: “Let’s put everything online!”
  • Web 2.0: “Let’s make everything social!”
  • Mobile: “Let’s put everything in apps!”
  • AI: “Let’s connect everything to large language models!”

Each wave begins with innovation and ends with an inevitable security reckoning. The only difference is that AI systems potentially have access to vastly more sensitive data and control systems than previous technologies.

The Real Security Threat Isn’t AI—It’s Developers Building AI

While tech luminaries warn about hypothetical rogue superintelligence scenarios, the actual threat model is much more mundane: developers with admin access and inadequate security practices.

The technical reality is sobering. These leaked API keys potentially allowed:

  • Prompt injection attacks against proprietary models2
  • Access to training data containing confidential corporate information
  • The ability to manipulate model responses for systems potentially deployed in critical applications

But the philosophical reality is even more concerning: if companies at the cutting edge of AI development can’t get basic operational security right, what hope is there for the thousands of smaller organizations now rushing to integrate AI into their products?

The Ghost of Security Practices Past

What’s most frustrating about this incident is how utterly preventable it was. The security community has been warning about hardcoded credentials for decades3. We have:

  • Automated scanning tools
  • Secret management systems
  • CI/CD pipeline integrations
  • Pre-commit hooks
  • Developer education programs

Yet somehow, in 2025, we’re still discovering API keys in public repositories. It’s as if cloud security best practices from 2010 are being rediscovered by each new wave of technology companies.

When Will We Learn?

The pattern is depressingly familiar:

  1. New technology emerges
  2. Companies race to build on it
  3. Basic security practices are neglected
  4. Embarrassing breaches occur
  5. Industry briefly focuses on security
  6. New technology emerges, restart cycle

For all the talk about AI safety research and alignment, perhaps we should start with the much simpler goal of aligning our security practices with what we’ve already known for decades.

In the meantime, maybe check your own GitHub repositories. Your secrets might not grant access to SpaceX data, but they’re probably still worth protecting.
